Built at Swindon Works in May 1903
On May 9th 1904 3440 worked the Down Ocean Mails with the famous railway timekeeper, Charles Rous-Marten on board.
On the 1 in 80 down gradient between Whiteball Tunnel and Wellington, just to the west of Taunton, Rous-Marten claimed to have recorded the train reaching a top speed of 102.3mph the first ever record of a train breaking the 100mph barrier.
